Trend Watch: The ‘Half-Tuck’

The button-up blouse or shirt is a common staple in any girls wardrobe. It’s a piece that can be taken from the office to the club. From the buttoned up to the neck look, or tucked into a pants or skirt for a day-time ‘work wear’ look,  and hung oversized / loosely buttoned for a more casual fun look.

Recent preppy trends have given the buttoned shirt look a popular revamp, with the likes of Alexa Chung showcasing this style. A shirt can be worn by anybody of any age or size. Crisp sophisticated shirts  in the style of Victoria Beckham, worn with skinny jeans or a pencil skirt. Silky loose styles over jeggings or pants can either hide lumps and bumps or by belting them – create curves.

As you can see its a versatile piece, but one aspect of the shirt that’s not often focused on is the tail of it. We either simply tuck it all in or loosely hang it over jeans.

The latest edgy street trend is – The Half Tuck … Casually hanging half your shirt out is the new style statement. It gives you the best of both worlds, its chic but also says ‘I havent made that much effort’. It also creates an asymetric look, which can give off the illusion of a longer torso. You can try it with tee-shirts or jersey tops too. Its messy and laid-back cool.

The trick is to do the tuck gradually as the whole idea is to look effortless, if one side is sharply tucked in and the other is straight down it can look too harsh. Tucking just in the front and leaving the rest loose, looks accidental, like you had no time or moved about during the day.

As long as your whole look remains stylish and edgy you avoid looking lazy. So, team with a funky belt, cropped blazer or jacket with the shirt hanging below it. Lower rise bottoms work with this look best.
