Earlier today I shared a pic on the blog of a conversation that took place on twitter between Ed Sheeran and The Irish Indo. It detailed a request from the paper for Ed Sheeran to get in touch with an Irish girl who was clearly suffering from a terrible and tragic illness, and what’s more the star seemed to know the girl and had promised to meet her in October when he returns here.
It was only after I shared the pic that I learned the full story of the saddening events. Dublin teen Triona Priestley, a huge Ed Sheeran fan, had been battling Cystic Fibrosis, and the illness was on the verge of overcoming the poor girl. The 15 year old only wanted to hear Ed’s voice one last time and the guys at the Irish Independent were anxious to help.
Following on from the tweets, Ed managed to get in touch with the Priestley family, and this afternoon he granted Triona’s final wish by singing to her. The family have since spoken to the media and revealed that Ed sang Triona to sleep earlier today, and the young teen passed away peacefully shortly afterward. Her brother Colm has since thanked everyone for their support and help through Triona’s fight against the illness.
“Myself and the family would like to thank Ed Sheeran and everyone who started and supported the #SongForTri campaign. What they gave us and her was a beautiful last moment together. Triona slipped into a sleep as Ed was singing to her and passed away afterwards. Ed Sheeran sang her to sleep.
We would like to thank everyone who played their part in making that happen. We are all so proud of Triona and how she fought Cystic Fibrosis.”
#songForTri had been trending on Twitter since Sunday and with the Irish Independent’s help, Triona at least got to speak to Ed and hear his voice today. The family have asked for privacy now to deal with their tragic loss. We wish to extend our deepest sympathy to Triona’s family at this heartbreaking time.
