Lads attention span..or lack of

At a BBQ last weekend in a friends house, there was an obvious divide between who socialised with who. We’re all reasonably long term buddies, but it was noticeable that the girls were sticking to themselves for convo and us guys were @ the same.

It got me thinking about guys and our attention span. I rolled this topic out to the lads before coming up with this just to ensure I wasn’t a loner on this topic, and sure enough it turns out I’m not. Being a guy at this age however, naturally, no matter what topic I bring up around my friends, both mature and not so mature, ends up relating to sex some how or other. Eeek. So how did it pop us this time with such a boring topic?

Firstly, the scienc-y type people reckon us guys sub-consciously think about the subject from anywhere between once every 6 to 30 seconds, so immediately we don’t need an excuse for talking about the subject.

However where does this relate back to our attention span? Well put it like this, if we’re engaged in convo with you for a even a minute, well you do the maths..

Anyway back to the topic. We figured that in a list of what we find are interesting areas of convo which tend to keep us engaged in conversation with a girl, you could essentially sum the list up as a rap song, with sex, money, and alcohol the primary attention grabbers, closely followed by fun and boys toys.

We want to hear about your pay rise, your afternoon spent in Ann Summers, and we even want to hear about this party on Friday night that you want us to go to. However turns out we don’t actually want to hear about Kate’s new goldfish, dress, or even her trip to the “nail technician”. We don’t even want to hear about the Katy Perry concert which you and the girls are going to. Unless you bought us a ticket of course.

My very-very-very hard to justify point? Don’t expect us to be interested in irrelevant stuff, instead chat about mutual stuff which you’d like to hear back. Can’t imagine you’d be too interested in Johnny’s trip to Spar for the paper??Just a thought.
