How To Survive Valentine’s Day As A Single!
We caught up with Dating expert Avril Mulcahy to bring you gals a survival kit for this loved up Tuesday! Here is what Av had to say.
It’s that time of year again, where we see a barrage of red hearts, stuffed bears, chocolates and red roses bursting from our television screens and high streets. The holiday of love, is clearly marketed as a holiday for two and with the constant reminders, it can be tricky for singles to feel in the mood for love.
Here are three tips to help SoSueMe’s singles get through Valentines Day with a smile!
1. Celebrate:
Be a Singlelista, rather than a lonely singleton. Ditch the old maid handbook and choose a new way of living. This is not the time to sit and mope. Society, tells you have to be in a relationship over Valentines, but who cares? Think of all the good words associated with your single status: Freedom, fun, independence, adventure. So, what better excuse than the official “day of love” to treat yourself to a little pampering: a special girly facial, a cute little outfit or a new haircut. After all, if YOU can’t love you, how can you expect anyone else to?
2. Single Swopshop:
Use your established network as a source to find a date for yourself. Yes, the best way to begin to meet new people is through the people you already know – your friends, family and work colleagues. They know what you like and dislike. So, invite one of your fellow single girlfriends around to your house for dinner, however this is not a simple catch up for idle gossip. This time, she must bring one single friend of the opposite sex for you and you must return the favour. It’s like a Single Swopshop. Word of warning….be sure that your friend doesn’t have feelings for her invited guest!!
3. Use Dating Networks:
As the old saying goes, if you can’t beat ‘em…join ‘em. This is a great time to take a step out and celebrate all that is to be offered in the dating world. There are hundreds of singles waiting for you on numerous online dating sites. I work as the Dating & Relationship Spokesperson for Parship.ie and I can highly recommend them for finding a suitable partner. Other options are singles events and there are many: I’m co-hosting a ‘Love in the Aisles’ supermarket singles event in Tesco on the eve of Valentines; Brendan Courtney is hosting another singles event on Valentines night itself at Café en Seine; and there are loads more events happening in pubs, clubs and restaurants focusing on the unattached. If you’d prefer a private service, you can also come to me individually and I will headhunt a bachelor who meets your wants and needs.
The main thing is to celebrate your singleness, find OTMs (opportunities to meet people) and you’ll have one of the best Valentine’s Days ever!
