New Actress Transformed For Aaliyah Biopic

KMazur

During the Summer we brought you the news that young Disney actress Zendaya Coleman had been cast to play Aaliyah in the upcoming Lifetime biopic. However, weeks later the teen dropped out after falling under fire from internet trolls and rumours of script and rights disagreements. She posted her own explanation to her Instagram to explain –

‘Let me just explain something. The reason why I chose not to do the Aaliyah movie had nothing to do with the haters or people telling me that I couldn’t do it, I wasn’t talented enough, or I wasn’t black enough. It had absolutely nothing to do with that.

“The main reason is that the production value wasn’t there, there were complications with the music rights, and I just felt like it wasn’t being handled delicately considering the situation.

And I tried my best to reach out to the family on my own, and I wrote a letter, but I was unable to do so; therefore, I felt not really morally OK with moving forward with the project.

“With all that being said, congratulations to the new woman playing Aaliyah; I only hope she does not have to deal with half the hate that I had to deal with. And remember that we are all human beings trying to do what we love to do. Let’s practice motivation and love; not discrimination and hate. All right?’

Now a fellow young actress Alexandra Shipp has signed off on the role with the tv movie due out in Autumn some time. Shipp, who also bears a striking resemblance to the late r n b star who died tragically in a plane crash in 2001, features in a 16 second teaser clip which was released last week.

Wearing Aaliyahs trademark 90s crop top and baggy pants, the quick teaser has sent chills down the spines of hardcore Aaliyah fans. However the film has come under much scrutiny due the families disagreement to its release. Its set for release in November so we will be tuning in to see if it does one of our favourite 90s artists justice.
