TREND WATCH: Laser-Cutting
I saw this gorgeous LASER-CUT leather skater-skirt in Nicole Richies upcoming ’Winter Kate’ collection,
and now shes been snapped out & about in it which has led me to investigate this trend further …
Well low and behold, would you believe, this was a huge feature from Fashion Week A/W 2012 … So we can expect to see this feature on some pieces on the high street coming in soon …
So, WHAT IS LASER CUTTING????
Laser cutting is a technology that uses a LASER to cut materials, and is typically used for industrial manufacturing applications, but is also starting to be used by schools, small businesses, hobbyists ….. AND IN FASHION!!!!
Laser cutting works by directing the output of a high-power laser, by computer, at the material to be cut. The material then either melts, burns, vaporizes away, or is blown away by a jet of gas, leaving an edge with a high-quality surface finish …
In ‘lay-terms’ … it gives the fabric a precisely cut effect on the edge of the garment or throughout the whole piece, whether that be a series of tiny holes/shapes or just a structured edging ….
While alot of the pieces shown above are haute-couture … We’re not going to be out in a nightclub in pieces like them, BUT you can expect to see this trend in other forms eg. cut-outs, or on lace/mesh fabrics – giving it a nice pattern …
