Who Will Be Christian Grey??!

With news breaking yesterday that Ryan Gosling is in talks to play the lead in the adaption of 50 Shades of Grey, we look at some of the choices available to the producers, and who might best bring Grey to life on the big screen.

Ryan Gosling While Gosling has done the rounds on RomComs, this role would require something darker of him, maybe more akin to his role on Drive, and even though his name has been mentioned by sources close to author EL James, there has been an outcry from fans of the books. Gosling is percieved as “too sweet” or “too innocent” for the role, and whether he really is the studios frontrunner remains to be seen.

Ian Somerhalder The Vampire Diaries and Lost star certainly seems high up on some people’s lists and would have no problem in portraying the billionaire playboy with a penchant for kinky sex. The question of his casting could come down to whether the studio feels they can bankroll a potentially very lucrative franchise with the actor in the starring role. Already a sex symbol, the casting rumours have done nothing to hurt his status and Somerhalder may be a dark horse for the role if the studio are willing to take a risk.

Matt Bomer The fan favourite to play Christian Grey by a country mile, Bomer has been the number one choice for the readers since news broke that a movie was in the works. His work on tv’s White Collar and this years Magic Mike show he’s equally at home looking sharp in a suit, or stripping for the camera. Someone has even gone so far as to cast him already, this fanmade fake trailer that we posted on SoSueMe.ie back in June for the movie caused a storm on YouTube and was shared over 8,000 times on SoSueMe.ie. Scott Elrod Who’s he I hear you ask?! This relative unknown actor has been quietly working away in the background in Hollywood for a couple of years now, landing small parts in movies like The Switch and roles on tv shows such as Castle and NCIS. If the studio behind the movie decide to go for an unknown actor, Elrod could be their man, the 37 year old actor proving himself capable, not to mention he looks good in a suit!!

Henry Cavill British actor Cavill is high up on the list of candidates to bring Christian Grey to life, the Tudors and Immortals star proving himself bankable and with the upcoming release of Man of Steel, about to become a household name. Cavill though has a lot on his slate for the coming months and if theres a push to get the movie made while there’s still a buzz around the book, he may be unavailable for an early shooting schedule.

Alexander Skarsgard Swedish actor Skarsgard would seem to be an almost perfect fit for the role of Christian Grey. Tall, lean, athletic build, fair hair and chiselled features, the True Blood star is no stranger to filming steamy sex scenes, nor is he a big screen virgin, having previously worked on Straw Dogs and Battleship. Expect to see his name more and more as the casting list narrows down and I for one think he may be the man with the right amount of talent and charisma to land the part.

Gabriel Macht Ok, so I’m stretching it a bit here. Macht’s name hasnt been mentioned by the studios or any of the media sources close to the story, but his role on tv’s Suits deserves at least to land him a mention. His character of Harvey Specter is the ultimate alpha male, dominant, powerful, fiercely intelligent and charismatic. Men want to be him, women want to be with him, and at the end of the day isn’t that the ultimate tribute to what Christian Grey represents?!
