Random Things You Didn’t Know About The Gilmore Girls!

gilmore girls

Earlier this week you guys might remember we wrote about the possibility of a Gilmore Girls reunion.

Well to celebrate the very likely possibility that the show will be making a return to the screen (and oh my God, we hope it does!), we here at SoSueMe decided to feature some fun Gilmore Girls facts that you may not have known!

Enjoy!

  • Alexis Bledel (Rory Gellar) didn’t learn English until she started school! She is half Argentinian and her first language is Spanish.
  • Remember the tumultuous relationship between Rory and Stars Hollow resident bad boy Jess? Well the two characters may have gone through phases of hating each other on the show but in real life, the actors were very much a loved-up couple!! Unfortunately the union between Alexis and Milo wasn’t to be, and Alexis is now to married to Vincent Kartheiser.

  • In quite a lot of scenes, particularly in the first series, Loreli is seen wrapping her arms around Rory, or linking arms with her while they walked. Fictitious motherly love? Nope! Alexis Bledel (Rory) was so new to acting at the time, that she would always forget where she was meant to stand, so Lauren Graham (Loreli) would often put her arms around her in a bid to guide her to the right position in different scenes or keep her on the exact mark she was meant to be.

  • When Alexis Bledel was cast as Rory, she had no TV experience, so, in a bid to help her adjust, the late Edward Herrmann (who played Rory’s grandfather Richard Gilmore) became her mentor. He would regularly take her out to dinner at Musso & Frank, the famous restaurant that was featured in movies such as Ocean’s Eleven, and give her advice on acting.

  • In season 3, Rory has very large pizza made especially for Lorelai’s birthday. The pizza prop was made from foam but covered with real pizza sauce and toppings. In the book The Gilmore Girls Companion it was revealed that one of the crew members did a bellyflop onto the pizza once filming was finished!
  • Chris Pine (below) originally auditioned to play the role of Rory’s father Christopher. He only very narrowly lost out on the role.

  • On the show, Jess played Luke’s nephew but it seems the two also had a similar close friendship off-set. Scott Patterson (Luke) was apparently fond of pranking Milo (Jess) and would do things like nail his shoes to the floor, or fill them with shaving cream!
  • Coffee, eggs, bacon, pancakes, followed by more coffee – the staple breakfast of Rory Gilmore. Actually no. Alexis Bledel doesn’t like coffee, so whenever you see her character drinking it on the show, she’s actually chugging back Coke Cola.

  • Sometimes filming on the Gilmore Girls set could go on for as long as 22 hours so those who didn’t have their own personal trailers would use their break times to sleep on any spare couch or bed they could find. Apparently some crew members would even grab power naps in their cars which were parked on the streets of Stars Hollow.
  • Liza Weil, who plays the super-swotty Paris Gellar, originally auditioned to play Rory! Even though producers felt she wasn’t right for the part, they still wanted her in the series and so created the part of Rory’s BFF especially for her! Here she is today!

  • Can you imagine Stars Hollow without Luke and his cafe? Nope we can’t either! This piece of trivia has never been confirmed but apparently Luke’s character was originally supposed to be a woman called Daisy. It seems however that the producers felt Lorelai needed more potential love interests and so changed the character to male.
  • We can’t imagine anyone other than Melissa McCarthy playing chef Sookie, but apparently Alex Borstein (the voice of Lois on Family Guy) was originally offered the role. In the end, she had to pull out due to other filming commitments. Borstein’s husband Jack Douglas won the role of Jackson, the vegetable supplier and Sookie’s love interest/future husband!

  • And here’s another Family Guy reference! Remember when Rory graduated? Next time you see that scene, look at the other students standing alongside her as Seth MacFarlane was one of them!

  • In season 1, the producers wanted to use a John Lennon song but couldn’t do so until Yoko Ono had read the section of script that the song was going to be accompanying. Once she confirmed she was happy for the song to be used, the usage fee for that brief sound clip was apparently in the region of €19,000!
  • The show’s annoyingly-catchy theme song ‘Where You Lead’ is actually sung by a mother daughter duo, Carole King and her daughter Louise Goffin.
  • Matthew Perry and Lauren Graham were once a couple way back in 2002, which as many have pointed out, essentially means that Lorelai and Chandler once dated! Most. Perfect. Couple. Ever!
  • Stars Hollow is actually based on a real place!! The creator of the series once visited Washington Depot in Connecticut and today says she based the atmosphere of Stars Hollow on that town.

And there you go guys, some random facts about The Gilmore Girls!
