Last night’s Miss Universe pageant, which took place in Las Vegas last night, has made headlines around the world today and for all the wrong reasons!
Host Steve Harvey made a VERY awkward blunder on live TV when he announced Miss Colombia as the winner only to realise moments later that he had read the results wrong and that she was in fact the first runner-up.
Holding up the results card, he said, “Folks, I have to apologize. Let me just take control of this. This is exactly what’s on the card. The first runner-up is Colombia. Miss Universe 2015 is Miss Philippines. I will take responsibility for this. It was my mistake, it was on the card. Horrible mistake but I can show it to you right here. The first runner up is Colombia.”
Miss Universe 2014 Paulina Vega, who is also from Colombia, had rushed to congratulate her fellow country woman after the original announcement was made as the assumption was that the crown would remain in Colmbia.
Embarrassingly, Paulina then had to take both the crown and sash from Miss Colombia and give it to Miss Philippines.
Following the show, Steve posted a Facebook status in which he apologised profusely for his mistake.
The embarrassed host also apologised on his Twitter however he made another mistake when he misspelled both ‘Colombia’ and ‘Philippines’ in the tweet, an error that was pointed out to him by a large number of his followers.
The status was promptly deleted and replaced, this time with the correct spelling.
Miss Universe Ireland, 21-year-old Derry beauty, Joanna Cooper put in an outstanding performance and looked absolutely amazing on stage. Unfortunately however she didn’t make it into the top 15.
We have no doubt that Joanna has a bright future in the modelling industry.
