Beyonce showed the world last night just why she’s the queen of music, closing the MTV Video Music Awards with an epic nearly 20-minute performance. Tears streamed down her face as she was joined onstage by her husband and daughter, amid the numerous rumours surrounding her marriage of late.
In a star studded night of performers, Queen Bey outdid every one of them, but lost out on video of the year which went to Miley Cyrus who let a homeless man accept her award (yes, you read that right!)
As Beyonce accepted the Michael Jackson Video Vanguard award, the VMA’s version of a lifetime achievement award, she kissed her daughter and husband Jay Z, who called her the ‘‘greatest living entertainer.’’ The pair also won best collaboration for the hit ‘‘Drunk In Love.’’
‘‘I have nothing to say but I am filled with so much gratitude,’’ Beyonce told the huge crowd as they chanted her name repeatedly.
There was a moment of silence held for Michael Brown, the 18-year-old who was fatally shot by a police officer in Ferguson two weeks ago, followed later by a video message urging people to take action to eliminate racism, during which some of the Kardashian clan were photographed playing with their phones instead of paying their respect, something people were quick to pick up on on social media.
All in all it was a much tamer affair than previous years, but it will be remembered as the event that cemented Beyonce’s place as the best female entertainer on the planet. All hail Queen Bey!
