Whether you loved it or loathed it, Lupita Nyong’o’s pearl dress, that she wore to this years Oscars, was a head turner.
It has hit the headlines for both positive and negative reasons, with the pearl embellished gown being stolen and subsequently recovered in the last few days. But the real question on the minds of fashionistas has been- how do you create a dress made entirely from pearls?!
Lupita’s dress was one of a kind and custom designed for her by Francisco Costa at the Calvin Klein Collection.
The dress is made entirely of pearls- more than 6,000 to be precise, and rings in at a cost of a whopping $150,000! To put that in context, that’s roughly €134,000!
Speaking to Vogue about how the dress was made Costa says
“[We created] a series of textures with intricate placements of a variety of different-sized pearls. We looked at a variety of different pearls—South Sea, iridescent, and natural—and decided that the natural pearls looked the most beautiful.”
Lupita herself described the dress as a “timeless and priceless piece of art”. How the woman managed to sit down while being encrusted entirely in pearls we’ll never know!
What did you make of the dress?
